A portrait of Helen Keller made of arranged clothing by artist, Noah Scalin

One of the reasons I love photo mosaics, and any type of mosaic for that matter, is that the possibilities are endless! Today on the blog, I am sharing a captivating installation by renowned artist, Noah Scalin.

Using a wide assortment of donated clothes, shoes, and other accessories, Scalin arranged the items to create a three dimensional mosaic of Helen Keller. The installation was part of the Spring Break Art Show in Times Square in 2017.

I love how on one angle it looks like someone left their laundry strewn about, but as you come around to another side, the portrait comes together. Much like looking at the tiny photos of a photo mosaic up close, only to see a larger, more impressive image come into view as you step back.

Noah Scalin is an acclaimed artist, author, speaker and innovator. He has created mosaic portraits of other well known activists, philanthropists and american pioneers out of clothing, shoes, stickers, mulch, canned goods and more! Check out his other works here.
